Refrigeration And Air Conditioning

Air conditioning and refrigeration may be defined as the simultaneous control of all, or at least the first three, of those factors affecting both the physical and chemical conditions of a media, whether it be air or an industrial process fluid. These factors include temperature, humidity, motion, dust, bacteria, odors and toxic gases. Refrigeration systems are common in most commercial buildings, as well as many industrial facilities. The refrigeration process involves compression/heating and expansion of a working fluid, as well as heat transfer. These processes cause the working fluid, the refrigerant, as well as the cooled media, to undergo property changes and changes of state.

Refrigeration and air conditioning related energy consumption is growing at a rapid rate in Pakistan. A recent survey by ENERCON in Pakistan indicates that one third of the estimated 12% annual electricity consumption growth rate in the commercial sector could be attributed to air conditioning. At present, installed air conditioning tonnage in the residential sector exceeds 200,000. The growth rate of air conditioning demand in the residential sector is estimated to be around 14% per annum. In view of the heavy demand that refrigeration and air conditioning systems place on precious energy resources, steps must be taken to promote efficient energy utilization in refrigeration and air conditioning.
