The world is migrating from an economy built on the foundations of the petrochemical industrial revolution to a new and different economy in which the building blocks are computers, communications, and the media - which is commonly termed as the Information Technology (IT).

Information Technology is an increasingly powerful and pervasive life force. IT is facilitating human access to awesome computer power, megavolumes of information, gigaframes of entertainment and the cumulative knowledge of millions of other people. IT has penetrated to the core of professional and personal lives. IT is tilting the balance of international trade, employment levels, and politics. IT is at the synapses of national defence strategies the world over. In and out of itself IT is neither good or bad. But once shaped into systems, the potential for positive or negative socioeconomic and geopolitical shifts is mind boggling.

Between the casual users and IT professionals are, financial managers, engineers, defence strategists, travel agents and stock brokers, among others, who depend on IT constantly.
